OUTER BANKS, NORTH CAROLINA

I recently spent a week at Duck, Outer Banks, North Carolina. The Outer Banks are barrier islands off the coast of North Carolina and the southern part of Virginia. They extend for about 200 miles. On the Outer Banks is where the Wright Brothers developed their airplane and made their first flight. There is a nice national monument park in Kill Devil Hills to them. There are several main islands that most people visit. Bodie, Hatteras and Ocrocoke are three of them. Ocrocoke is where Black Beard the pirate hung out. There are three lighthouses on the islands Cape Hatteras, Bodie Island and Curritach in Corolla. There is also a herd of wild horses on the northern part of the islands. They are Spanish Colonial in breed. They came with the Spanish and some from ships wrecked. The Cape Hatteras area is known as the Graveyard of the Atlantic. Many ships wrecked on the Diamond Shoals.  Main towns are Nags Head, Kill Devil Hills, Kitty Hawk, Duck and Corolla. There is lots to do. Plenty of beaches on the Atlantic Ocean or on the several sounds. Plenty of fishing, para sailing, jet skiing, mini golf, good sea food with lots of restaurants. A great place for a vacation.
